1. Passive = Avoiding
What it looks like:
- • Never saying what you actually want
- • Always agreeing to avoid conflict
- • Apologizing for everything
Example:
Friend: "Help me move Saturday?"
You (have plans): "Um... okay..."
Result: Resentment builds. Your needs never get met.
2. Aggressive = Attacking
What it looks like:
- • Blaming and criticizing
- • Using "you always" or "you never"
- • Interrupting and demanding
Example:
Friend cancels plans.
You: "You ALWAYS do this! So selfish!"
Result: People get defensive. Nothing gets solved.
3. Assertive = The Goal
What it looks like:
- • Clear about needs
- • Respectful of others
- • Uses "I" statements
Example:
Friend cancels.
You: "I feel disappointed when plans change last minute. Can we reschedule?"
Result: Needs get met. Relationships strengthen.
