Breaking the Rumination Cycle
The Rumination Trap
Why your mind keeps replaying the same painful moments
What is Rumination?
Replaying the same negative thought over and over, like a broken record
"What if I'd said something different?" → 2 hours later: STILL thinking about it
Common Rumination Patterns:
- •Replaying awkward conversations
- •Obsessing over what people think of you
- •Going over past mistakes endlessly
- •Imagining worst-case scenarios
Why It Happens:
- 1.Your brain thinks it's solving: "If I think about it enough, I'll figure it out"
- 2.It feels productive: You're "working on" the problem (you're not)
- 3.Habit loop: The more you do it, the more automatic it becomes
The Problem: Rumination doesn't solve anything. It just keeps you stuck in the pain.
What would you do?
It's 11pm and you can't stop replaying an embarrassing thing you said in class today. What should you do?
